a team of 19 elite firefighters is being remembered tonight for dedicating their lives to protecting others. the members of the granite mountain hotshots got trapped yesterday by the 9-thousand acre yarnell hill fire burning near prescott. they followed their training... crawling into their fire shelters ... but the flames were just two much. our gadi schwartz has been in prescott all day learning more about those brave men who lost their lives. gadi, what can you tell us? this picture says so much... it's to dark to make out his face- in the smoke- he's carrying a chain saw- and he is fighting the thomson ridge fire- in new mexico protecting parts of the jemez... the caption says belongs he belongs to the granite mountian hotshots- the same crew that lost 19 members in yesterday while they tried to protect the community of yarnell. residents say protecting people's communities is what they did. and tonight residents of prescott are remembering their names.... like kevin woyjeck -a 21 year old who wanted to grow up to be a firefighter like his dad- a captain in of the los angeles county fire department or bill warneke- a 25 year old who was soon to be a father himself. he and his wife were expecting a child in december... just 2 of 19 - lives cut short in the dangerous work of trying to protect others from destruction.
